The Chinese New Year is a powerful symbol of fresh starts, right down to its smallest sartorial details. Everybody dons new clothes, new shoes and even new underwear, for good luck. Western influences have crept into even the most venerable of Chinese traditions, though, and women are increasingly choosing European or American designs for their Chinese New Year wardrobe. Ready to lure stylish women back to Chinese fashion is the young, Xiamen- based designer Min. She produces edgy but romantic collections under the name MS.Min: modern silhouettes executed in traditional Chinese textiles; subtly masculine tailoring paired with warm hues and floral patterns. A native of Fuzhou, the capital of the southeast province of Fujian, Min studied at the London College of Fashion and worked in Europe with Viktor & Rolf and in China for Ports 1961. Now back in China full-time, Min sells both her collection and a carefully curated selection of vintage clothing at her own boutique. It’s a perfect destination for those who seek glamour, nostalgia and romance. §
