Thomas Tait's fine art of fashion

Canadian Designer Thomas Tait is the latest wunderkind to bring his angular, ultra-precise tailoring to London Fashion Week. He is the youngest ever graduate from Central Saint Martins – entering at 20; leaving at 22 – and went on to win the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize, whose judges praised his “curvilinear, minimalist, couture-quality approach to tailoring. His last collection drew from an austere palette of black, navy and nude, in natural fibres such as wool, silk and cashmere. Fierce shapes that highlight and exaggerate collarbones, hips and shoulders are more elegant than aggressive, while the occasional steam-moulded curve hints at softness underneath. It’s no surprise that Tait counts Alexander McQueen and Azzedine Alaïa as influences, but he describes the process of inspiration as a mysterious one. “If I had all the answers... I don’t think I’d be motivated to do it, he muses. “It’s always a hunt – trying to develop, trying to find something. There’s motivation in the mystery. §
