When it comes to London Fashion Week, one of the most coveted tickets in town is the young-designer showcase curated by Fashion East – breaker of talent, dispenser of industry mentoring and all-round good egg – and held at the Topshop Show Space. The latest addition to Fashion East director Lulu Kennedy’s stable of young designers (she has launched the careers of Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Gareth Pugh, Richard Nicoll and many more) is the Cyprus-born, Edinburgh College of Art graduate Elliot Atkinson. He pairs delicate pastel fabrics and florals with dark, heavy-duty textiles and adornments: an industrial-weight zip snakes down the back of a slim grey dress; a pale-pink strapless minidress is topped by a sculptural black bodice. Lean, feminine silhouettes are enlivened with cutouts and transparent panels that are as playful as they are sexy. His debut collection was snapped up by Browns Focus, while his new designs are reportedly inspired by “ritualistic body piercing, Native American culture and the Scottish Highlands”. Expect wild detailing, restrained shapes and plenty of tartan. §
