Being hand-picked by Delphine Arnault, daughter of Bernard and director of LVMH, to spend a year at Dior Couture’s Paris atelier before even graduating, then scooping the same prestigious Deutsche Bank grant as fashion prodigy Christopher Kane, is a pretty impressive start to any career. Such was the path of Chinese-born, London-based Huishan Zhang, who was widely admired for his stunning Central Saint Martins degree show in 2010 and who is about to launch his debut ready-to-wear collection. Eastern heritage meets Western influence in a luxurious collection with strong lines and feminine details, all in a subtle palette of soft charcoals and dove greys. Sharp tailored coats are given a contemporary edge with delicate petal cut-outs; jackets and capes come in sleek geometric shapes. They’re dramatic yet ultra-wearable; now it’s time for Zhang to become a household name. §
