The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

Luis Buñuel's newly restored film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) opened this weekend for an extended run at the BFI and the Curzon Mayfair in London to mark 40 years since its first release. The film depicts the doomed attempts of a bourgeois couple to host a dinner party. As you might expect from Buñuel, these plans fail for an increasingly surreal set of reasons in an arc that drifts in and out of dreams set within dreams and features a bishop-gardener, an assasin, a ghost policeman and a determined, seemingly endless march along a country lane for the movies six principle charactors.
